Biography

John MacKinnon was born on sky in about 1839. He was the eighth of 10 children one of whom died in infancy. John emigrated to Australia in 1853 on the ship Priscilla with his parents and all of his siblings other than he is eldest sister Ann. In 1857 Ann with her husband and children followed her family to Australia on the ship Melbourne.

John married Margaret Maher in Ballan Victoria. Margaret had emigrated to Australia from County Carlow Ireland. John’s marriage to a Catholic girl estranged him from his family. John and Margaret had nine children two of whom died in infancy. John left his wife and children and may have travelled to New Zealand. It is said that other members of his family sought to make contact with his family:

โ€œThe family lived in Melbourne (possibly near Coburg), and some members of the McKinnon family tried to contact them, but were not very well received. Mary Minchin and James McKinnon of Mardan were among these. Another family who lived around Prahran were friendly with Catherine Hicks, who visited them.โ€

Almost nothing is known of John’s life from the time he left his family. No record has been found of John’s death, his son Stephen thought he may have died working on the property of one of his brothers in Picola Victoria. It is thought he died about 1908.
