Biography

Angus was born at Smeaton on 28 April 1864. Angus was the eldest of seven children born to John McKinnon and Margaret Maher. Little is known of Angus’s early life, education or employment up until his marriage. Angus married Honora (Norah) Cashen and at St Ignatius Church Richmond on 24 April 1895. On the marriage certificate Angus describes his occupation as gripman and his normal place of residence as Richmond. Angus presumably worked on the cable car tramway system operating in Melbourne at the time.
Joseph, the eldest of Angus and Norah’s six children was born at 91 Varian Street Abbotsford in 1896. By the time of the birth of their second child Dora, in 1897, the family had moved to Yarragon.
Angus moved his family to Yarragon in response to the encouragement of his older brother Stephen to take up land for farming made available as a consequence of the Settlement of Lands Act 1893.
All of Angus and Norah’s children married producing nineteen grandchildren. Angus was a resident of Yarragon district at the time of his death on 14 February 1921.
