Biography
Norah was born at Eagle Hawk Gully, Maldon, on 15 May 1864. On her birth certificate her father Patrick is recorded as being a miner, presumably working in the gold diggings of the area. Her siblings as listed above are taken from her birth certificate, we therefore do not know whether or not there were other siblings born after her and indeed the names of the siblings recorded above rely on our interpretation of very difficult handwriting. Little is known of Norah’s early life, education or employment.
Norah married Angus MacKinnon at St Ignatius Church Richmond on 24 April 1895. At the time of her marriage she records her place of residence as being Fitzroy.
Joseph, the eldest of Angus and Norah’s six children was born at 91 Varian Street Abbotsford in 1896. By the time of the birth of their second child Dora, in 1897, the family had moved to Yarragon.
Margaret McKinnon, Angus’s mother, was a resident of Yarragon district at the time of her death in 1927. An obituary for her in the local paper describes her as an old pioneer of the Yarragon district having lived there for over 40 years. If correct, this would imply that Angus’s parents has lived in Yarragon from the late 1880โs a factor which probably prompted Angus and Norah with Joseph to move from Melbourne to Yarragon.
All of Angus and Norahโs children married producing nineteen grandchildren. In the final years of her life Norah lived with her daughter Dora Roche in the Yarragon district. Norah died on 30 November 1937.
