Biography
Richard was born in Derryfada Ireland around 1832, he emigrated to Victoria in 1856. Richard married to Mary Dwyer at St Mary’s Church Geelong in 1859. Mary arrived in Victoria shortly before the wedding she was probably Richard’s next door neighbour in Derryfada. Mary, a servant, was the daughter of James and Joanna Dwyer, Joanna’s maiden name was Carol. Richard was a labourer based at Dariwell (possibly Bell post Hill Geelong where interestingly there is a Liston Street) Margaret Liston, almost certainly Richard’s sister and John Dwyer were witnesses to the wedding.
Richard and Mary moved to Hope Street, Ashby (Geelong) where they remained until 1866/1868. The family then moved to Latrobe Street, Kildare (probably now Geelong East). By the time of Margaret Catherine’s birth in 1875 the family was at Little River. Richard was a Platelayer for the Victorian railways in 1888. On 14 March 1895 Mary purchased a 5 roomed house at 23 Elizabeth Street Geelong (on the corner of Queen Street). Mary purchased the house for the sum of £245. Richard and Mary remained at this house until their deaths.
Richard died on 8 February 1900 at the age of 68 years. Mary died on 1 June 1901 at the age of 64 years. Richard and Mary were buried at the eastern cemetery Geelong.
