Biography

Richard, also known as Dick was born in Hope Street Ashby in Geelong the third of eight children born to Richard Liston and Mary Dwyer. The family later moved to Latrobe Street, Kildare (probably now East Geelong) and then to Little River. Little is known of Richard’s education, youth or early employment history. Then Richard became a permanent employee of the Victorian Railways in May 1888 – he was to become a Foreman in the Way and Works Division. There is a photograph of a group of railwaymen with the caption Liston Flying Gang. By 1889 Richard was living in Richmond.

Little is known of Richard’s interests and life outside of work, we do know he was a member of citizen militias there being a group photo of him belonging to the Victorian Railways regiment in about 1904, and another photo of him belonging to the sixth battery Australian field artillery in 1912.

In 1889 Richard married Alice Smith the daughter of Henry Smith, farmer, and Mary Conroy. Alice was born in Taree New South Wales, at the time of her marriage she was living in Fitzroy. Richard and Alice had one son, Leslie, at the time of his birth they were living in Dover Street Richmond. When Leslie married in 1917 Richard and Alice were living at Mons’ Tooronga Road Malvern.

Leslie and his wife Veronica had five children the much loved grandchildren of Richard and Alice. Richard died at East St Kilda on 19 May 1954.
